Is the KonMari Method™ of de-cluttering right for you?

Are you surrounded by suffocating piles of washing, stacks of random papers, drawers full of junk, cupboards bursting at the seams?  Do you get frustrated when you can't find things?  Do you pay rent for a storage unit to store stuff you cannot fit in your home? Do you find yourself buying the latest storage baskets, boxes and shelving systems, hoping they will be the magic solution to your disorganisation, only to find them weeks later, brimming with more stuff and clutter?

You are not alone.  It is an affliction facing many who are also searching for an easy solution to decluttering and disorganisation. There are various decluttering approaches one could choose; the four box sorting technique, the backward coat-hanger method, Swedish death-cleaning, the 90/90 rule, the one in, one out rule and of course, the KonMari Method™ made famous by Marie Kondo...Just to mention a few.

Each method is different, but all are attempting to achieve the same thing: to reduce clutter and excess. Some methods may declutter by focussing on one room, or one issue or one group of items and may even offer to do the job largely for you. If you want quick, instantly noticeable results, these methods can deliver that for you. However my personal experience of some of these techniques is only a temporary tidiness!

The most striking difference between the KonMari Method™ and most other methods of decluttering is that you to tidy by category and not by location. Beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, miscellaneous (komono) items and sentimental items, every single item in your home is considered. Once you decide which items to keep and which let go, you then determine a home for everything you want to keep. There is some indescribable magic in the process that leads to all sorts of changes, not just lasting organisation.

If you would prefer to declutter thoroughly, with lasting results, and you would like to create lightness and space in your home and your life, and find beautiful and creative solutions to your storage then the KonMari Method™ is for you.  It does requires time, effort and a commitment to the process, but the results will be amazing.

To find out more, Marie Kondo's best-selling book, "The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up" is an excellent place to start.  The Netflix series "Tidying Up with Marie Kondo" is also a great way to understand how the method works. Of course working with a Certified KonMari consultant (professional organiser) is the most effective way to get started and to finish, as you will be supported and guided through every stage, from envisioning your ideal home and life through to checking every last knick-knack!

Katrina from Hi Tidy is a certified KonMari consultant based in Sydney, Australia and has been working with clients since 2019.
